Eight Vessels Identified for Further Investigation Amid 196 Contacts
Over 2,000 cases of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing were detected during Operation Kurukuru. This effort led to the identification of eight vessels for further investigation due to non-compliance with fishing regulations. The operation covered approximately 21.3 million square kilometers over two weeks. It aimed to combat IUU fishing and promote sustainable fisheries in the Pacific.
Collaborative Efforts in the Pacific
Operation Kurukuru was a joint initiative by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and 15 member nations, including Australia, Fiji, and the Federated States of Micronesia. This operation addressed the significant threats posed by IUU fishing to the economic stability and food security of Pacific Island nations. FFA Director-General Dr. Manu Tupou-Roosen emphasized the operation’s importance, stating, “This operation exemplifies regional collaboration. By tackling IUU fishing, we preserve our marine resources and secure the livelihoods of our people.”
Intensive Surveillance Operations
The operation focused on intensive surveillance through aerial and maritime patrols. Advanced technology was used to detect IUU fishing vessels. The results were notable, with over 196 vessel contacts made. The operation included 89 boardings in port and at sea. This collaborative approach fostered a united front against IUU fishing, encouraging information sharing and joint enforcement strategies.
Capacity Building for Sustainable Fisheries
In addition to surveillance, Operation Kurukuru emphasized capacity building. Training programs enhanced the enforcement capabilities of FFA members and partners. These initiatives focused on best practices in monitoring, surveillance, and maritime security. They align with the broader goal of ensuring the long-term sustainability of fisheries resources in the Pacific.

The operation involved 21 seconded officers from various countries. They participated in a week-long pre-operation training session aimed at improving their ability to analyze and filter data for better surveillance.
