MECDM completes Phase 1 of the Mini Solar Power Project, delivering renewable energy systems to 25 constituencies
Honiara, 20 July 2026: The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) today announced the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Mini Solar Power Project.
The project is a cooperation initiative between the Chinese Embassy in the Solomon Islands, MECDM, and Ever Exceed SI Company Ltd.
Under the Agreement of Cooperation signed on 21 August 2025, Phase 1 has been fully implemented. Installations have been verified, and documentation has been signed and stamped across 25 constituencies nationwide.
The constituencies covered are: East Makira, West Makira, Central Makira, Ulawa Ugi, East Kwaio, West Kwaio, East Are’Are, West Are’Are, Small Malaita, East Malaita, Central Kwara’ae, West Kwara’ae, North Malaita, Lau Mbaelelea, Baegu Asifola, Fataleka, Aoke Langalanga, South Malaita, East Guadalcanal, Central Guadalcanal, North Guadalcanal, West Guadalcanal, South Guadalcanal, Shortlands, and Gizo–Kolombangara.
Phase 1 included the supply and installation of 6.2kWh and 5kWh solar systems, valued at more than SBD $800,000.
The project marks a significant milestone in expanding access to renewable energy, strengthening community resilience, and accelerating climate action in the Solomon Islands. It also highlights the enduring friendship and practical cooperation between the Solomon Islands and China, and aligns with MECDM’s commitment to sustainable development and the use of low-carbon energy.
Phase 2 of the Mini Solar Power Project will begin once financial arrangements are finalised by the People’s Republic of China. This next stage will expand the initiative to more communities and help build a stronger foundation for long-term energy security.
