Johitori community members showed their happy heart pose for the photograph with their Member of Parliament Honourable Jeremiah Manele.

In a landmark event that brought visible relief to mothers, children, and farmers, the Member of Parliament for Hograno-Kia-Havulei Constituency (HKHC), Jeremiah Manele, officially handed over brand-new three-tonne trucks to the inland communities of Johitori and Alualu on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

The two vehicles, each funded under the National Transport Fund (NTF) through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, were endorsed by the Hograno-Kia-Havulei Constituency (HKHC) Office and their Member of Parliament.

The handover ceremonies took place at Johitori in Susubona and Alualu in Kaevanga, both recognised as highly productive agricultural areas within the Hograno ward.

In his keynote address, Manele expressed pride in delivering the vehicles, emphasising that they represent far more than a mode of transport.

“These new vehicles are tools to improve livelihoods, ensuring that agricultural produce reaches the market reliably to boost local economic growth and food security,” he said.

Manele further noted that the vehicles provide a vital lifeline for remote and underserved populations, addressing critical last-mile challenges.

“Residents can now access essential services, medical care, and economic opportunities with greater ease. This is a significant step forward in our commitment to inclusive development,” he added.

The MP reaffirmed that transportation projects remain a priority under the HKH Constituency Development Plan for 2025–2026, which has been approved by the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD).

He urged the recipient communities to manage their vehicles responsibly and ensure they are used for their intended purposes.

“You must look after these vehicles and explore ways to generate income for their long-term sustainability. The HKHC Office has entrusted them to your care for your own benefit,” Manele stated.

The MP also took the opportunity to reiterate the provisions of the new Constituency Development Funds (CDF) Act 2023 and how the HKHC operates under the reformed legal framework.

“Things are no longer as they were in the past, when funds were not properly managed and accounted for. The new law governs the use of CDF, and I call on all recipients to take care of projects funded under CDF or any other government agency,” he emphasised.

In response, representatives from both communities expressed their deep gratitude to Hon. Manele and the HKHC Office for the historic assistance.

Speaking on behalf of Johitori Community, Letiara Aron said, “We sincerely appreciate our Guest of Honour, Chief Jeremiah Manele, the former Prime Minister and our MP, for his leadership and continued commitment to our development.

“This truck is more than a vehicle. It is a tool for development, a symbol of progress, and an investment in our future. It will help transport agricultural products, building materials, and support church and school activities while improving access to essential services.”

At the Alualu ceremony, teacher Maja Gnokro, speaking for the women and children, emotionally reflected on the community’s long struggle with transportation challenges.

“For years, we have struggled to move church members, transport sick patients, carry schoolchildren, and attend community activities. Many families have walked long distances or relied on costly transport arrangements. Today, history has been made. This is the first time our community has ever received such a vehicle. Previous generations dreamed of having a community truck, but today that dream has become a reality through Manele’s leadership and vision.”

Both communities assured the MP and the HKHC Office that they would manage and maintain their vehicles responsibly to ensure they continue to serve current and future generations.

Meanwhile, HKHC Constituency Development Officer (CDO) Apollos Manegere acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development for funding, the Ministry of Rural Development for facilitating and approving the 2025–2026 development plans, and the leadership of Manele.

He added that under the NTF, the constituency had also supported Havulei with one boat, and Kia and Katova wards with two boats each for transport and seaweed projects.

“As a community, we recognise that development comes with responsibility. We commit to working together to ensure this vehicle is properly managed, maintained, and used for the benefit of all our people.

“Through unity, cooperation, and good stewardship, these assets will serve our community for many years to come. Together, we can continue to improve the quality of life for our families and build a brighter future for the next generation,” Mr. Manegere stated.

The Ministry of Rural Development also extended its congratulations to the communities and urged them to safeguard their new assets for long-term benefit.

HKHC Constituency Development Officer Apollos Manegere delivers his speech to welcome the community members and government representatives.

The handover ceremonies were attended by chiefs, Constituency Development Committee (CDC0 members, church leaders, elders, women, youth, and children, reflecting the broad community support and shared commitment to sustainable development.
