Caretaker Prime Minister Faces Challenge from Five Contenders Including David Qurusu, Son of a Former MP, in National Election Showdown
Manasseh Sogavare, currently serving as caretaker Prime Minister, is set to vie for the East Choiseul constituency in the upcoming national election. He faces stiff competition from five other contenders, including David Qurusu, the son of a former Choiseul MP.
Sogavare, having completed a full term as Prime Minister since April 2019 and with over nine years of cumulative service in the role, is seeking another mandate from his constituents.
His main challenger, Qurusu, previously worked as a consultant for Nathan Associates and now represents the Solomon Islands United Party. Other contenders include lawyer James Kaboke, Moreen Dusaru of the People’s Liberal Democratic Party and Davis Soleboe Pitamama.
Sogavare’s leadership has faced criticism for decisions like switching diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China without consultations with the people and extending parliamentary sessions, as well as prioritizing the Pacific Games over other national needs. However, he defends his record, attributing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and 2021 riots to his government’s decision-making context.
In an interview, Sogavare refuted claims of economic mismanagement, highlighting achievements listed in the OUR Party manifesto, such as political stability, successful hosting of the Pacific Games, infrastructure development and foreign policy engagements.
The OUR Party manifesto also outlines legislative successes, COVID-19 management efforts and recent approval of measures to boost women’s representation in provincial elections. A report by the Office of the Auditor General however revealed shocking findings where government Ministries have misused financial systems on public funds in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the electoral contest heats up, voters in East Choiseul will weigh Sogavare’s leadership track record and promises as they head to the polls on April 17.
