Ministry of Health and Medical Services Partners with Super Construction to Revitalize Historic Healthcare Facility in Central Islands Province
After almost two decades without significant renovations, Tulagi Hospital, located in the provincial capital of Central Islands Province, is set for much-needed improvements. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services recently inked a contract agreement with Super Construction, marking a crucial step towards the hospital’s revitalization. The contract, valued at approximately SBD 7.2 million, was formally signed at the MHMS Conference Room in Honiara.
Established in 1912 within a leaf hut by the British Protectorate, Tulagi Hospital has evolved into a vital healthcare institution serving over 30,000 individuals from Tulagi and surrounding communities, including Russell, Ngella, and Savo. Despite its historical significance, the hospital has seen minimal renovations over the years, prompting the urgent need for refurbishment to enhance healthcare services for Central Islands residents.
Funded by the World Bank, the renovation project will be overseen by the World Bank’s Project Management Unit (PMU) Team within MHMS. Collaborating closely with the local contractor, the PMU aims to ensure timely and high-quality construction work.
The proposed renovation will have five existing buildings, including the Administration Office, aiming to modernize infrastructure and improve service delivery standards. Speaking at the contract signing, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ms. Pauline McNeil emphasized the importance of enhancing health facilities, particularly provincial hospitals, to expand access to essential services and ensure quality healthcare for local communities.
Aligned with the Ministry’s National Health Strategic Plan 2022-2031, the investment in infrastructure reflects the strategic objective of improving health infrastructure to facilitate decentralization of services, enhance health coverage, and bolster pandemic preparedness.
Expressing gratitude for being entrusted with the contract, Managing Director of Super Construction, Mr. David Leong, affirmed the company’s commitment to the project. He acknowledged the Ministry and the World Bank Project team for their confidence in Super Construction and pledged to deliver the renovation work diligently to improve healthcare services in rural areas.
With preparations underway, work at Tulagi Hospital is expected to commence soon as the local contractor gears up to mobilize onto the site in the coming weeks. This collaborative effort between government agencies, contractors, and stakeholders underscores a shared commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring better access to quality healthcare for the people of Central Islands Province and beyond.
