Honiara police boost presence ahead of PG 2023 – 22 Vehicles Impounded and 21 Arrests Made in Weekend Traffic Operation

Police conducted checks on 380 vehicles during traffic operations over the weekend as part of the preparations for the Pacific Games 2023 (PG23).

Director of the National Traffic Department (NTD), Superintendent William Foufaka, reported that 22 vehicles were impounded for prosecution, and 21 suspects were arrested during the traffic check.

Director Foufaka specified that out of these arrests, 10 suspects were apprehended for having alcohol in their blood, 11 suspects were detained for driving unlicensed motor vehicles, and one individual was arrested for driving without a valid driver’s license.

Superintendent Foufaka emphasized that this operation is a continuation of the ongoing preparations for PG2023, as part of the Safe Games strategy currently being implemented by the police.

Mr. Foufaka underlined that the primary objective of this operation is to send a clear message to residents of Honiara that the police are intensifying their efforts to address anti-social behaviors.

Director Foufaka urged individuals consuming alcohol in public places, driving unlicensed vehicles, unlicensed drivers, drunk drivers, and all other road users to respect the rule of law. Zero-tolerance traffic enforcement operations will persist leading up to the games.

He added, “If you plan to drink, please do not drive. If you intend to consume alcohol, ensure you do so at a designated location and arrange for public transport to take you home safely.”

Honiara city police also played a significant role in the operation by enhancing their presence at various locations within the main Honiara Central Bureau District.

The drivers involved in these incidents will face charges and will appear before the Honiara Magistrates’ Court on a later date.
