The Philippines has appointed businessman Johnny Sy as its honorary consul to Solomon Islands, with a focus on strengthening trade, investment and relations between the two countries.
Foreign Affairs Minister Rick Houenipwela acknowledged the appointment during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade in Honiara on Tuesday, 13 October.
The ministry said Mr Sy’s appointment would help strengthen cooperation between Solomon Islands and the Philippines, particularly in business, education, health and tourism.
Mr Houenipwela said the Philippine government’s decision to appoint Mr Sy reflected its confidence in his ability to represent the country’s interests in Solomon Islands.
He identified trade, investment, sustainable development and people-to-people exchanges as areas where the two countries could expand cooperation.
Role of honorary consul
An honorary consul generally helps promote relations between the country they represent and the country where they are based.
Unlike a career diplomat, an honorary consul is usually appointed from the local community or business sector and may carry out consular responsibilities alongside other professional activities.
The duties can include assisting nationals of the appointing country, promoting business connections and supporting cultural exchanges, depending on the authority granted by that government.
Mr Sy’s appointment is expected to help develop business links between Solomon Islands and the Philippines.
The ministry said his private-sector experience could also help encourage investment, skills development and knowledge sharing.
Mr Houenipwela acknowledged the contribution of the Filipino community to Solomon Islands, particularly its role in strengthening relations between the two countries.
He said the ministry would work with Mr Sy to advance areas of mutual interest.
