Government targets 10,000 hectares of new cocoa and coconut plantations to boost agriculture and rural incomes
HONIARA – The Government has unveiled plans to establish 10,000 hectares of new cocoa and coconut plantations nationwide as part of its strategy to revitalise the agriculture sector and stimulate long-term economic growth.
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Franklyn Derek Wasi announced the initiative while delivering his response to the Speech from the Throne in Parliament.
He said expanding cocoa and coconut production is a key component of the GREAT Coalition Government’s agenda to strengthen agriculture, create employment opportunities in rural communities, increase export earnings and improve the livelihoods of Solomon Islanders.
Minister Wasi said cocoa and coconut remain two of the country’s most important agricultural export commodities, and the Government is committed to expanding new plantations while restoring ageing farms through improved planting materials, farmer support programmes, and stronger pest and disease management.
He said the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development will also expand seedling nurseries, improve drying and storage facilities, and strengthen agricultural extension services to help farmers increase productivity and produce higher-quality crops.
According to the Minister, achieving the 10,000-hectare target is expected to increase agricultural exports, strengthen food and income security, and promote economic growth in rural communities throughout the country.
Minister Wasi reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to building a modern, resilient and commercially competitive agriculture sector through targeted investments, strategic partnerships and practical support for farmers, ensuring agriculture continues to play a central role in Solomon Islands’ economic development.
