Solomon Islands Government activates national response to Cyclone Maila, prioritising relief and recovery efforts
Honiara, Solomon Islands, Thursday 9 April 2026 – The Solomon Islands Government has activated a whole-of-government response to address the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Maila, Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele announced today.
Delivering a national address, the Prime Minister said the response is being coordinated under the National Disaster Management Plan 2018, ensuring all efforts are aligned, targeted, and focused on the needs of affected communities.
The National Disaster Management Office is working closely with Provincial Emergency Operations Centres, National and Provincial Disaster Operations Committees, and key stakeholders to deliver timely assistance.
The Prime Minister called on all government agencies, provincial authorities, and constituency leaders to work through established national disaster coordination mechanisms to ensure an effective and unified response.
He also acknowledged the important role of development partners, humanitarian organisations, churches, and the private sector in supporting relief and recovery efforts.
Prime Minister Manele emphasised that immediate priorities include the delivery of humanitarian assistance and the restoration of critical infrastructure and services to affected communities.
He reassured the nation that the Government stands with its people during this challenging time and remains committed to supporting recovery efforts.
