Prime Minister Manele launches Phase Two of Rural Sustainable Development Program to support rural communities
Honiara, Solomon Islands, Wednesday 26 November 2025 – Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele today launched the second phase of the Rural Sustainable Development Program, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening rural livelihoods across the country.
In delivering the keynote address, the Prime Minister said the new phase marks another significant milestone in the partnership between the Government of Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China. He acknowledged the continued support of the PRC Government, noting that the programme has already delivered meaningful improvements in communities since it began in late 2023.
More than SBD$80 million has so far been invested through RSDP in small community infrastructures, transport and fisheries projects, water and sanitation systems, renewable energy, and other local development priorities. PM Manele said these investments show a strong alignment with the National Development Strategy, particularly its focus on reducing poverty, improving basic services, and supporting food security.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the programme’s strength lies in its people-centred approach, its commitment to inclusive development, and its focus on environmental sustainability. He said these guiding principles will continue to shape the rollout of Phase Two as more communities and constituencies access support.
PM Manele thanked the Government and People of the People’s Republic of China for their ongoing partnership. He acknowledged Chargé d’Affaires His Excellency Yang Jie and officials from the Chinese Embassy, along with the Minister for Rural Development Daniel Waneoroa and MRD staff, for their role in preparing the new phase for implementation.
He encouraged constituencies receiving projects to ensure the resources are used responsibly and for the benefit of communities. He said the government looks forward to seeing the continued positive impact of the programme in the months and years ahead.
RSDP is a donor-partnership programme between the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) and the People’s Republic of China Embassy. The programme was first launched in 2023 as a successor to previous rural development support. Its core objective is to improve social and economic development and enhance the livelihoods of citizens in rural areas across Solomon Islands, particularly those living in remote or underserved communities.
