PM Manele highlights Huawei’s role in boosting digital connectivity and infrastructure across Solomon Islands and the Pacific.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has expressed appreciation for Huawei’s ongoing contributions to digital development in the Solomon Islands and the broader Pacific region.
Speaking at an appreciation dinner hosted by Huawei on Tuesday evening, 29 April 2025, in Honiara, the Prime Minister acknowledged the company’s commitment to enhancing digital connectivity and technological resilience across the Pacific.
He also recognized Huawei’s sponsorship and active involvement in the 29th Annual General Meeting, Business Forum, and Expo of the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA), describing their participation as a significant investment in regional progress.
During his remarks, the Prime Minister referred to the Lagatoi Declaration—a regional framework adopted by 12 Pacific ICT and Telecommunications Ministers in 2023. The declaration outlines six strategic pillars for driving digital transformation in the region:
- Digital Transformation
- Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- Digital Infrastructure
- Digital Security and Trust
- Digital Capacity Building and Skill Development
- Regional Cooperation and Representation
The Lagatoi Declaration serves as a roadmap for accelerating digital development and promoting inclusive collaboration among Pacific nations.
The Prime Minister stated that Huawei’s initiatives align closely with the declaration’s priorities. He highlighted the ongoing rollout of 161 telecommunications towers across the Solomon Islands, a project implemented in partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd and supported by funding from the People’s Republic of China.
As of 10 April 2025, 102 towers had been constructed, with 28 already operational and 37 awaiting activation. The project aims to provide digital connectivity to 80% of the country’s population by its expected completion in August 2026.
He also acknowledged Huawei’s long-term collaboration with Solomon Telekom, which has played a key role in improving broadband access, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
In closing, the Prime Minister thanked PITA for selecting the Solomon Islands to host its 2025 AGM, Solomon Telekom for organising the event, and Huawei for its continued support in advancing the region’s digital future.
