West Guadalcanal and Paripao Ward voters in Guadalcanal to elect new reps in by-elections on June 4, 2025.
Voters in West Guadalcanal Constituency and Paripao Ward in North East Guadalcanal Constituency are set to head to the polls on June 4, 2025, for by-elections following the passing of two elected leaders.
These by-elections will be held a year after the Solomon Islands’ first joint elections in April 2024. The West Guadalcanal by-election follows the death of late MP Moses Garu, and the Paripao Ward by-election comes after the passing of late MPA Brally Tavalia.
Governor General Sir David Tiva Kapu has officially proclaimed the West Guadalcanal by-election date, while the Minister for Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening (MPGIS), Wayne Ghemu, declared the Paripao Ward by-election date.
In preparation for the by-elections, the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) has officially opened the Guadalcanal Provincial Election Office, which will serve as the central hub for all electoral operations. The office is now fully operational, housing senior electoral officials responsible for the administration of the by-elections.
Nomination Centres for both constituencies have started accepting candidate nominations and will continue for 14 days. The SIEC invites interested candidates and the public to visit the office for any queries or assistance regarding the elections.
In addition, the SIEC has completed a three-day training program for senior election officials, focusing on essential election administration areas, including nomination procedures, polling station management, vote counting, and results transmission. The training involved Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers, and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), who will work together to ensure a secure electoral environment.
With training now concluded, the by-elections are on track for June 4, 2025. The SIEC has expressed confidence in its preparation efforts and looks forward to a smooth, transparent election process.
