Women are urged to strengthen transparency, accountability and community participation in Solomon Islands’ mining sector.
HONIARA, Solomon Islands – Women play a vital role in promoting transparency, accountability and community wellbeing in Solomon Islands’ mining communities, participants heard at a workshop in Honiara focused on strengthening women’s voices in the extractive sector.
Convened by the British High Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Solomon Islands Government and in partnership with the Solomon Islands Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (SIEITI), the workshop brought together representatives from government, civil society organisations, students and other stakeholders.
The workshop explored ways to strengthen women’s participation in mining communities and improve their engagement in decision-making processes that affect their lives and livelihoods.
Participants discussed the importance of transparency and accountability in the extractive industries sector, community engagement and responsible resource governance.
The workshop also examined practical measures to increase women’s involvement in Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) processes and improve information sharing between stakeholders and mining communities.
British High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Paul Turner joined Munkhtuya Altangerel, UNDP Pacific Office Resident Representative, and Dirk Wagener, UN Resident Coordinator for Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, at the workshop.
Speaking at the event, Turner highlighted the critical role women play in fostering informed and resilient communities.
“The women are the eyes and ears for ensuring good governance in mining areas.”
The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by the British High Commission, UNDP, SIEITI and the Solomon Islands Government to support inclusive participation and strengthen transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources.
