Traffic Sign Installation Underway on Upgraded Road Network

Permanent traffic signs are being installed on upgraded roads to improve road safety, traffic flow and guidance.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), has commenced the installation of permanent traffic signs along completed sections of the upgraded road network. Initial activities are focused along the Henderson to Mberande Road (Guadalcanal Province) but will soon be followed with requirements within Honiara City (along Mendana Avenue & Tandai Highway). This will mark another important milestone in improving road safety and traffic management along public roads.

The new traffic signs form an integral part of the road improvement works and are designed to provide clear guidance and information to motorists, pedestrians and other road users. They include regulatory, warning and directional signs that help road users navigate the upgraded road network safely, improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents.

The installation of these signs complements other road safety features being delivered under the project, including road line markings, bus bays, footpaths, drainage improvements, street lighting, guardrail & guide-posts. Together, these improvements are creating a safer, more efficient and accessible transport network for all road users.

Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mr. Mike Qaqara, said the installation of the traffic signs marks another significant milestone in the Government’s efforts to improve road safety and deliver modern transport infrastructure.

“These traffic signs are not merely roadside fixtures; they are essential road safety devices that provide important information and guidance to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. They help regulate traffic, warn road users of potential hazards and improve the overall safety and efficiency of our transport network.”

Mr. Qaqara encouraged all road users to familiarise themselves with the new signs and to comply with the instructions they provide.

We encourage all motorists to obey speed limits, observe traffic signs and exercise courtesy when using our roads. These improvements have been made to protect lives, and everyone has a responsibility to use the infrastructure safely.

He also appealed to the public to help protect the newly installed traffic signs from vandalism and theft.

Traffic signs are public assets that benefit everyone. Deliberately damaging, removing, defacing or stealing these signs not only results in costly repairs and replacement but also places the lives of motorists, pedestrians and other road users at risk. We urge communities to take ownership of this infrastructure, protect it and report any acts of vandalism to the relevant authorities.

The traffic signs are being installed under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), which is jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands (SIG).
