SIART delivers financial literacy and feed formulation training to strengthen rural farmers and agribusinesses in Malaita.
Solomon Islands Agriculture Rural Transformation (SIART) Project continues to deliver vital capacity building trainings that will be beneficial for local farmers in the provinces.
From Wednesday 26 to 28 August 2026, a team from SIART was in Auki, Malaita Province to conduct a three-day training workshop on Financial Literacy and Feed Formulation for SIART’s Young Professionals (YPs) working as junior agriculture extension officers in the province and the Provincial Project Team (PPT) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL).
From these trainings, the YPs and the PPT will be enable to transfer the skills and knowledge gained to local farmers who are members of the Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in Malaita Province.
Malaita Province has 45 signed Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) supported by the SIART Project.
SIART’s Agribusiness Officer for Malaita Province, Ms. Betty Arumae highlighted that the Financial Literacy Training will equip ABPOs with essential business management skills.
“This will provide practical financial literacy and management training to help local farmers and rural groups run profitable agribusinesses,” she said.
The Financial Literacy Training focused on key areas including expense and profit, records (financial and physical records), understanding a ABPO and how it operates to generate income from sales, and asset management, budgeting, cashflow management, savings and investment.
The training also covered Business Strategy and Governance and Regulatory Compliance.
The SIART Project actively hosts financial literacy training as part of its core mission to empower rural farmers and agribusinesses.
Implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) in partnership with the World Bank, SIART integrates these financial programs to transition local producers from subsistence farming into sustainable commercial operations
Meanwhile the Feed Formulation Training was based on a manual developed by the SIART Project aimed to provide small-scale livestock farmers with practical guidance on formulating balanced and nutritious feed for various types of livestock.
“By empowering local resource persons and young professionals, we are building capacity for value chain actors for a stronger, more resilient agriculture sector in our provinces,” Mr. John Tatalo, SIART’s Capacity Development Officer, said.
“The training underscored the importance of ongoing support, both technical and financial, for ABPOs to effectively implement improved practices,” he added.
These trainings represent another step forward in SIART’s mission to transform Solomon Islands agriculture through capacity building, market linkages, and sustainable practices, strengthening the key sectors for economic growth and community resilience.
