PM Matthew Wale backs greater powers and resources for provinces, with Western Province seeking stronger development and services
Prime Minister Matthew Wale has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to decentralising powers, resources and services to provincial governments during discussions with Western Province Premier Billy Veo and his executive.
During a meeting with Premier Veo and his executive members on Monday, PM Wale said the Government wants provinces to have greater responsibility and resources to drive development, create jobs and improve services.
“More power must be given to the provincial governments, and more resources must go down. That is the future.”
He said the focus should not only be on the name of a federal or state government system, but on ensuring provinces receive real powers and resources.
Premier Veo welcomed the discussions and said the Western Provincial Government shares the national Government’s focus on stability, economic development and delivering tangible improvements to the lives of the people.
“That is our focus too. We want to continue improving the lives of our people through development and better services.”
The Premier said Western Province is ready to work closely with the national Government to unlock opportunities in areas such as fisheries, energy, agriculture, mining and education.
PM Wale said provinces must increasingly become active participants in commercial and economic development.
“We want all provinces to go into commercial activity. That is the way of the future.”
The Prime Minister said the Government wants to see stronger provinces, greater local decision-making and more resources reaching communities.
