Guadalcanal Provincial Government approves $2.5 million to support flood-affected communities recovering from Cyclone Maila.
The Guadalcanal Provincial Government has approved $2.5 million to support communities across Guadalcanal Province that continue to experience the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Maila.
Guadalcanal Province Premier Willie Atu told Tavuli News that prolonged bad weather and flooding remain a serious concern for communities in different parts of the province, months after the cyclone.
“The heavy rain and flooding are still affecting many of our communities. This continues to be a real issue for us ,as people are trying to recover from Cyclone Maila,” Premier Atu said.
He said the approved funding would be used to provide essential food supplies and support affected communities for recovery and restore their livelihoods.
Premier Atu said food supplies had already been transported last Sunday by ship to communities affected in the weather coast region (South Guadalcanal).
Response teams are also distributing assistance to communities in the eastern and western parts of Guadalcanal, using a two-tonne truck to transport food supplies.
He said the immediate assistance is particularly important for families whose gardens and food crops have been damaged or remain inaccessible because of the wet conditions.
Premier Atu urged people across Guadalcanal Province to make use of the food assistance as temporary support while waiting for their gardens and crops to recover.
The provincial government is continuing to assess the needs of affected communities as heavy rain and flooding persist, with the focus on providing immediate assistance while supporting longer-term recovery.
The $2.5 million allocation is expected to strengthen the provincial response and help communities meet essential food needs during the recovery period.
