Governor General Receives Two Prime Ministerial Nominations as May 2nd Election Looms
At the close of nominations on April 30th, the Governor General received two nominees for the post of Prime Minister. Jeremiah Manele, representing the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) and Matthew Cooper Wale, a candidate for the CARE Coalition, both emerging as contenders for the position.
Jeremiah Manele, born in 1968, boasts an extensive political and diplomatic background. He began his political career after serving in various public service roles, eventually entering parliamentary politics in 2014. Manele’s parliamentary journey commenced with his election as the Member of Parliament for the Hograno/Kia/Havulei constituency. Over the years, he has assumed various significant roles in parliament, including Leader of the Official Opposition, Minister of Planning, Development and Aid Coordination and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Manele hails from Samasodu village in Isabel province.
GNUT says they stand strong in solidarity ahead of the election of their candidate for Prime Minister. The coalition says they are fully committed to the cause of national unity, economic stability and positive transformation for a peaceful and prosperous Solomon Islands.
Matthew Cooper Wale, also born in 1968, first entered the political arena through a special election in March 2008, representing the Aoke Langa Langa Constituency. Prior to his political career, Wale pursued a profession as a Chartered Accountant. Throughout his tenure, he has held numerous parliamentary positions, notably Opposition Leader and has also served on various Parliamentary Committees.
Wale’s political journey has been marked by challenges, including his vocal call for Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to resign in 2021 and his subsequent filing of a no-confidence motion against the Sogavare government, which, ultimately, was defeated. Wale originates from Ambu village in Malaita province.
The CARE Coalition reaffirms its commitment to champion the change mandated by the voters, urging Representatives to heed the call for change being demanded by the electorate.
The election of the Prime Minister is scheduled for May 2nd, 2024.
