Prime Minister Sogavare and President Adeang Forge Strategic Ties during Nauru Leader’s Visit to Solomon Islands
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare extended a warm welcome to the President of the Republic of Nauru, David Adeang, who arrived in the country over the weekend to participate in the 2023 Pacific Games.
President Adeang paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sogavare, engaging in discussions that covered mutual areas of interest for both nations and the broader Pacific Islands Forum. Among the topics discussed were the historical contributions of Nauru during the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), where Nauru played a crucial role in restoring peace, law, and order in the face of challenging circumstances marked by ethnic tensions.
In aviation, Solomon Islands expressed gratitude to the Nauru national carrier, Air Nauru, for providing aircraft for charters during maintenance periods of Solomon Airlines’ Airbus 320. Discussions also touched upon the potential formalization of the Air Services Agreement (ASA), representing a promising avenue for collaboration between the two countries.
Both Prime Minister Sogavare and President Adeang recognized the value of fostering educational and human development initiatives, emphasizing the importance of knowledge exchange, cultural understanding, and people-to-people exchanges. Prime Minister Sogavare extended an invitation to students from Nauru to enroll and study at the Solomon Islands National University, an offer that was warmly accepted by President Adeang.
Acknowledging the appointment of former Nauru President Baron Waqa as the incoming Secretary General for the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in 2024, Prime Minister Sogavare highlighted the commitment to the agreed-upon rotation of leadership among the subregions of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia.
Highlighting their shared commitment to regional priorities as members of the Blue Pacific continent, Solomon Islands and the Republic of Nauru reiterated their dedication to collective actions in key areas such as climate change mitigation, sustainable ocean governance, economic development, and the responsible use of marine resources.
Prime Minister Sogavare emphasized the potential for Pacific Island governments to contribute to the economically and ecologically sustainable management of regional tuna fisheries. He underscored the importance of implementing sound fisheries policies at the national level and strengthening these efforts through regional cooperative initiatives.
Overall, the discussions between Prime Minister Sogavare and President Adeang reflected a spirit of collaboration, mutual appreciation, and a commitment to advancing shared interests for the prosperity and well-being of both nations and the broader Pacific region.
