Local Police commends Choiseul communities in bomb disposal operation where the EOD Team removed WW2 bombs.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) expressed their gratitude to the communities in Choiseul Province for their cooperation during a recent bomb disposal operation.

RSIPF Commissioner, Mr. Mostyn Mangau, commended the communities in the area of operation for their compliance with the EOD team’s instructions in dealing with unexploded ordnance (UXOs). He emphasized the serious threat these bombs pose to the local population, which has endured their deadly presence for several years.

Commissioner Mangau explained that the operation was initiated in response to reports from local communities regarding the discovery of bombs in the province over the past two months. The dedicated EOD team successfully removed and safely disposed of eight UXOs, including a large Aerial Bomb, which had posed a significant danger to the community.

Mr. Mangau highlighted the challenges posed by unstable weather conditions during the two-day operation, but commended the EOD team for their professionalism and their ability to ensure the safe removal of UXOs. This, he noted, is crucial to maintaining the safety and well-being of the affected communities, allowing them to return to their normal lives.

To further assist in maintaining safety, Mr. Mangau urged anyone who comes across UXOs to promptly report them to the Police emergency line at phone number 999.

Many of the inhabitants still live with unknown quantities of explosive remnants of war left behind from combat between Japan and the United States during World War II. Unexploded ordnance (UXO) of both U.S. and Japanese origin remains on some of the nation’s atolls.
