Solomon Islands launches GEDSI Strategy 2026–2030 to promote inclusive participation across the fisheries sector.
Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) has officially launched its Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy 2026–2030, marking a significant step towards building a more inclusive and equitable fisheries sector in Solomon Islands.
Launching the strategy, MFMR Director of Fisheries Mr. Edward Honiwala said the new framework would strengthen the participation and recognition of women, youth, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups across the fisheries sector.
“For too long, the contributions of women, youths and marginalised groups have been undervalued and overlooked. Yet they are the backbone of our communities, working tirelessly in the fisheries sector with many diverse roles along fisheries value chains,” Mr. Honiwala said.
The GEDSI Strategy 2026–2030 replaces MFMR’s previous Gender Mainstreaming Strategy, which was developed more than a decade ago and focused primarily on inshore fisheries.
Mr. Honiwala said the new strategy expands the ministry’s focus across key areas of its work and provides a strategic guide for mainstreaming gender equality, disability and social inclusion throughout the fisheries sector.
He said the inclusion of persons with disabilities was an important area that had previously been lacking, adding that the new strategy would help ensure marginalised groups have equal opportunities to participate in fisheries management and development.
“Being inclusive in fisheries is making sure that all voices and contributions in the fishery sector are heard. Together we can build a fishery sector that uplifts every voice, values every contribution and leaves no one behind,” he said.
Mr. Honiwala also acknowledged line ministries, development partners, donors and GEDSI experts who contributed technical and financial support to the strategy’s development.
He particularly recognised SBC through the BEAM project for its lead support, including technical expertise and financial assistance for provincial and stakeholder consultations.
The Director called on all partners to continue supporting implementation of the strategy over the next five years.
He formally launched the MFMR GEDSI Strategy 2026–2030 on behalf of the Minister, urging stakeholders to work together to empower inclusive fisheries development across Solomon Islands.
