SICCI welcomes the SME Credit Guarantee Scheme relaunch, urging banks to streamline lending and improve access to business finance.
The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) has strongly welcomed the national government’s reopening of the Small and Medium Enterprises Credit Guarantee Scheme (SMECGS). As the peak representative body for the private sector, SICCI views this initiative as a critical breakthrough in its long-standing advocacy for affordable, inclusive, and accessible business finance across the country.
For years, SICCI has championed the reduction of lending barriers, hosting dedicated multi-stakeholder roundtables to highlight how rigid collateral demands stifle local innovation and job creation. The chamber notes that with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) comprising approximately 80% of its membership network, resolving the finance gap is essential for building a resilient, broad-based economy.
“Access to finance remains one of the single greatest operational hurdles for indigenous and growing businesses in the Solomon Islands,” said SICCI Chief Executive Officer, Mr. James Dolarii. “We highly commend the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration (MCILI) and the Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) for listening to the private sector and reviving this framework. This risk-sharing scheme directly transforms good business ideas into bankable realities by giving financial institutions the safety net they need to support local entrepreneurs.”
While celebrating the relaunch, SICCI emphasizes that the true impact of the scheme depends on efficient execution by commercial banks and financial institutions. The chamber calls upon its banking partners to streamline administrative pipelines, lower bureaucratic hurdles, and ensure swift processing times so capital reaches businesses without unnecessary delays.
The chamber urges its MSME members and the wider business community to prepare by regularizing financial records, formalizing business plans, and engaging actively with participating lending institutions. Moving forward, SICCI remains fully committed to collaborating with the government and financial regulators to monitor the scheme’s progress, optimize local content development, and ensure sustainable economic growth.
