Kirakira Wharf Construction Reaches 90% Completion

Structural framework underway for the new Kirakira Wharf Passenger Terminal Building.

Large black arch rubber fenders are fully mounted along the concrete edge to absorb impact and protect both vessel hulls and the main wharf structure during mooring.

Looking back from the waterfront at the newly built T-head berth of Kirakira Wharf. Once completed, this maritime structure will significantly improve vessel berthing safety, cargo offloading, and sea transport connections for MUP.

The Kirakira wharf deck features raised wheel guards/kerbs and stainless-steel safety handrails enhancing safety.

Construction work on the Kirakira wharf structure in Makira-Ulawa Province (MUP) has reached 90% toward its full completion.

The remaining works include the approach road upgrade and protection that features designs to withstand natural elements.

Development of onshore facilities, mainly the passenger terminal building, is also in full swing.

This terminal will provide shelter and supporting utilities for arriving and departing passengers. A short access road, linking the new wharf to the existing main road, is also set for construction.

Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Mike Qaqara, said the full completion will be a milestone achievement for the national government and the people of MUP.

“This province has been without a proper wharf since past years, and with this modern and resilient structure, it will improve access, increase safety and efficiency of maritime services, and support economic activities in the province,” Mr. Qaqara said.

He added that the government remains committed to delivering infrastructure projects for MUP that will provide long-term benefits to communities.

The ministry’s national safeguards consultant officer George Maere said their joint team was on-site last week and conducted the 6th Community Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting with all stakeholders.

“The team was impressed with the progress so far and looking forward to the finishing works and full completion by the end of this month.

“We are thankful to all parties involved as they have demonstrated unity and the right mindset to drive development aspirations for their provinces’ future,” Mr. Maere said.

This project, along with the Honiara International Port Upgrade and Ahanga Wharf at Bellona Island, is part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a major infrastructure initiative led by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the Asian Development Bank and being implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. These projects aim to strengthen road and maritime transport infrastructure across the country to improve connectivity, support economic growth, and improve access to essential services.
