Gold Ridge confirms a slope movement while police have yet to verify social media claims of fatalities.
Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML) has confirmed that a localized slope movement occurred at the northwest edge of Open Pit 1 early Monday morning, while unverified claims circulating on social media alleging fatalities remain unconfirmed by authorities.
In a preliminary statement issued on 27 July, GRML said the incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m.
The company said precautionary safety measures, including restricted access and exclusion zones, had already been implemented before the slope movement occurred.
GRML said that, based on information available to the company, no injuries, fatalities, or damage to equipment had been confirmed and that mining operations and construction activities continue without disruption.
The company immediately activated its emergency response protocols, including prohibiting entry of non-operational and external personnel into the affected area, reinforcing site security, maintaining full closure of the hazard zone, and deploying technical teams to carry out inspections and stabilization work.
GRML said it is working closely with the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety and stability of the site.
“The safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors, and surrounding communities remain our highest priority,” the company said.
Meanwhile, numerous social media posts have alleged that unauthorized gold panners may have been caught in the slope movement. The posts also claim fatalities and recovery efforts are underway.
However, as of publication, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force has not publicly confirmed any deaths, missing persons, or recovery operation related to the incident. Tavuli News has also been unable to independently verify the claims circulating online.
Gold Ridge has long experienced the presence of unauthorized gold panners entering restricted areas around the mine despite safety controls. GRML’s statement does not specifically address any reports involving unauthorized persons, but confirms that no injuries or fatalities had been verified in relation to its operations at the time the statement was issued.
GRML said verified updates will be provided through its official communication channels.
