Parliament resumes on 4 August with Governor-General’s Address and election of a new Deputy Speaker

Parliament will convene on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.

The upcoming sitting marks the commencement of a new meeting following the adjournment sine die of the Third Meeting towards the end of last year.

The Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Jefferson Hallu, has confirmed that a written notice was issued to all Members of Parliament on Tuesday this week to satisfy the thirteen daysโ€™ notice as required by the Standing Orders of the National Parliament.

At the first sitting on Tuesday, 4 August, His Excellency, the Governor General, on the invitation of the Prime Minister, will address Parliament outlining the GREAT Governmentโ€™s legislative plans and priorities.

Following the Governor-General’s Address, Parliament will consider a Motion in Reply, providing Members of Parliament with the opportunity to debate and reflect on the Government’s proposed legislative programme. Once adopted, the resolution will be conveyed to His Excellency in accordance with parliamentary practice.

The Clerk also confirmed that Parliament will elect a new Deputy Speaker during the opening week of the meeting. The position became vacant following the appointment of the former Deputy Speaker to the Executive as a Minister of the Crown.

Apart from the opening formalities and the election of the Deputy Speaker, no substantive Government business has yet been placed on notice for the first week of the meeting.

Mr Hallu noted that a number of Bills, motions, and other items of business remain on the Business Paper from before the recent change of Government. These matters will be considered in due course, although some Bills may be withdrawn and subsequently reintroduced should the new Government wish to do so.

The Clerk further indicated that it is highly likely that Parliament may adjourn on a special adjournment after the initial proceedings to enable the Government to present its Supplementary Appropriation Bill(s) to Parliament, and, most importantly, to provide sufficient time for the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to review the budget and present its report for Parliament’s consideration.

The programme of business outlined is expected to shape Parliament’s work during the month of August. Other substantive parliamentary businesses will be made known as they come to hand.
