PM Matthew Wale signs Letter of Intent with the U.S. to re-establish the Peace Corps Program in Solomon Islands
Prime Minister Matthew Wale has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the United States Government to re-establish the Peace Corps Program in Solomon Islands.
This marks a significant step in revitalizing a long-standing partnership.
The LOI was signed today in Washington, D.C. by Prime Minister Wale and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
The agreement signals the mutual intention of both governments to work towards the return of Peace Corps Volunteers to Solomon Islands, supporting community-based development, capacity building and cross-cultural exchange.
Both parties also reaffirmed their commitment to undertake the necessary legal and programmatic processes required under their respective national frameworks to facilitate the program’s re-establishment.
Prime Minister Wale welcomed the renewed engagement, highlighting the historical impact of the Peace Corps in Solomon Islands.
“History itself has shown how Solomon Islands has benefited from the Peace Corps program. Many Solomon Islanders can testify to the positive experiences and contributions made by Peace Corps volunteers over the years,” he said.
Deputy Secretary Landau also welcomed the signing acknowledging the Solomon Islands Government’s commitment to restoring the program.
Despite past challenges, both governments have reaffirmed their shared commitment through this agreement, paving the way for the return of Peace Corps Volunteers.
During the visit, Prime Minister Wale and his delegation also met with the Peace Corps Chief of Staff and officials at headquarters to discuss timelines for concluding a formal agreement at the earliest opportunity.
