Prime Minister calls for unity, responsibility and accountability to build a GREAT Solomon Islands on Independence Day
Theme: “Our Nation, Our Responsibility and Accountability – Building a GREAT Solomon Islands.”
My dear people of Solomon Islands,
Today, we come together as one nation to celebrate the 48th Anniversary of our Independence. This is a moment of pride, reflection, and renewed commitment to the future of our beloved country.
On this historic day, we honour the courage and vision of our founding leaders who stood firm and guided our nation to independence in 1978. Their determination gave us the freedom we enjoy today, and their legacy calls on each of us to continue building a nation that is united, strong, and prosperous.
This year’s theme — “Our Nation, Our Responsibility and Accountability – Building a GREAT Solomon Islands” — speaks directly to who we are and who we must become.
Nation-building is not the responsibility of government alone. It belongs to every citizen. It belongs to our leaders, our public servants, our churches, our businesses, our communities, and our young people. Each of us has a role to play in shaping the future of our country.
Responsibility means doing what is right, even when it is difficult. It means serving our nation with integrity, working hard in our respective roles, and putting the collective good above personal interests.
Accountability means being answerable for our actions to the people of this country. It means transparency in leadership, fairness in decision-making, and trustworthiness in how we serve our people. A nation grows stronger when its leaders and citizens uphold these values.
As your Prime Minister, I reaffirm my government’s commitment to building a GREAT Solomon Islands, a nation that is:
- Accountable and responsible at every level of leadership
- Governed with integrity and transparency
- Resilient in the face of economic and global challenges
- Empowered through opportunities for our people
- Together in unity, respecting our diversity and shared identity
We recognize that many of our people continue to face real challenges; the rising cost of living, limited opportunities, and pressures on households. These are not ignored. My government is working diligently to ensure that economic growth translates into real benefits for our people, especially for our indigenous citizens and our young generation.
But progress cannot be achieved by government alone. It requires partnerships.
To our development partners, thank you for your partnership and commitment to Solomon Islands.
To our public servants, I remind you of your duty to serve with professionalism, neutrality, and dedication. To our business community, I encourage fairness and responsibility in your business practices. To our youths, you are the future of this nation and your energy, ideas, and integrity will define the Solomon Islands of tomorrow.
And to every Solomon Islander, wherever you are, in our villages, our towns, or abroad.
This nation belongs to you. Its future is in your hands.
Let us use this Independence Anniversary not only to celebrate, but to recommit ourselves to the values that will move our nation forward.
Let us stand together with one purpose.
Let us act with responsibility.
Let us lead with accountability.
And together, let us build a GREAT Solomon Islands.
May God bless you all, and may God bless our Solomon Islands.
Happy 48th Independence Anniversary.
