Solomon Islands increases tourism budget to SB$46 million, driving growth and aiming for 100,000 visitors by 2035.
The Solomon Islands government has increased its budgetary support for the tourism sector, allocating more than SB$46 million this year. This is a rise from the SB$10 million annual budget over the past three years.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Choylin Yim Douglas, announced the increased support during the Tourism In Focus Summit held in Honiara earlier this week. The summit gathered tourism experts and stakeholders to exchange ideas and set strategic directions for the sector’s future.
Douglas said the government is committed to unlocking the tourism sector’s potential and positioning it as a fundamental part of the economy. She added that the vision is not just about increasing visitor numbers but creating sustainable growth, enhancing visitor experiences, and delivering long-term economic benefits.
The increased funding will be strategically allocated to foster growth in key areas and help the government achieve its goal of attracting 100,000 visitor arrivals by 2035.
Key initiatives include:
- Product Development and Diversification: A joint effort between the government and tourism operators to create new products and experiences while maintaining cultural authenticity and environmental sustainability.
- Investment in Infrastructure and Accommodation: Support for new hotel developments and upgrades to existing facilities to meet international standards.
- Aggressive Marketing and Promotion: Campaigns targeting key markets to position the Solomon Islands as a premier tourist destination, showcasing its unique culture and natural beauty.
- Capacity Building and Training: Programs aimed at improving service quality and building a skilled tourism workforce.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Strengthening public-private partnerships and international collaborations to support tourism growth.
Douglas encouraged all stakeholders to embrace the collective goal of building a thriving tourism industry. She said the journey is about empowering communities, preserving cultures, and showcasing the unique beauty of the Solomon Islands to the world.
The Tourism In Focus Summit is an annual event. The government communication unit says this year’s commitments and initiatives are expected to accelerate the industry’s progress and contribute significantly to the national economy.
