JICA and the Solomon Islands government launch a project to improve Honiara’s public transport system.
The “Capacity Improvement of Urban Transport Management in Honiara” project has been officially launched, aimed at enhancing the road traffic environment and establishing a sustainable, safe public bus system in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.
The project seeks to improve urban transport management in Honiara by developing public transport policies, standardizing bus operation roles, improving road traffic signage, and managing public parking. The goal is to make mobility more accessible and sustainable, supporting the city’s growth.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is leading the project in partnership with the Solomon Islands government through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID). Other key stakeholders include the Honiara City Council, Guadalcanal Provincial Government, Road Transport Board, and the Royal Solomon Islands Traffic Police.
Yosui Seki, urban transport policy and traffic management specialist and leader of the JICA expert team, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “We are excited to be working with the Government of Solomon Islands on this project. Our team has extensive experience in urban transport policy and traffic management, and we are confident that our expertise will contribute to improving transport management in Honiara.”
Mike Qaqara, Director of the Transport Infrastructure Management Services Department at MID, expressed his optimism, stating, “The Technical Assessment (TA) support will greatly help in the improvement of transport management in the city. We look forward to working with the JICA team over the next two years.”
The project is expected to positively impact the transport sector, contributing to the country’s economic growth and development.
