The Opposition has raised concerns over significant healthcare issues at Helena Goldie Hospital in Western Province, following a recent visit by the Leader of Opposition Matthew Wale and five other Opposition MPs. The group met with the Moderator of United Church Solomon Islands Rev. Armstrong Pitakaji and hospital staff to discuss the hospital's challenges. During the visit, the Opposition was informed that the hospital is grappling with several key issues, including poor structural conditions, inadequate healthcare services, and a severe lack of financial support from the National Government. Despite the scheduled handover of a newly renovated building this Friday, the hospital will face continued operational difficulties. The handover will occur with essential equipment, medical supplies, and facilities still missing, which the Opposition believes will worsen the situation. The Opposition team also observed contractors working under pressure to complete the building before the handover. They noted a plaque at the site marking a promise by Telekom, which remains unfulfilled. Dr. Raymond Dickson, the hospital's medical superintendent, emphasized that the new building will not resolve the critical issues of overcrowding and insufficient diagnostic equipment, which are essential for effective healthcare delivery. A shortage of medical staff, including doctors and nurses, further limits the hospital’s capacity to provide adequate care. The Opposition was informed of instances where only one nurse was on duty, leading to preventable deaths due to understaffing and a lack of medical supplies, including oxygen. There is also a lack of ongoing training for medical personnel, hindering their ability to keep pace with medical advancements. The hospital, a church-owned institution, relies on inadequate monthly grants from the government to cover operational costs, which do not meet the rising expenses associated with healthcare delivery. Opposition Leader Matthew Wale expressed regret over the hospital’s challenges, reiterating that these issues have been raised in Parliament without adequate response from the Government, which has claimed that the health sector is in good hands. Wale also commended the dedication of the hospital’s staff, particularly in light of the ongoing difficulties, and pledged to bring these concerns to the Government for urgent attention. The Opposition is calling for more robust government support to address the healthcare crisis at Helena Goldie and other similar facilities across the country.

Over 570 residents across four communities in the Faea District and one in the St John Community of Ravenga District now have reliable access to clean water, following the completion of a locally driven water project supported by international development partners. Tikopia, one of the outer islands of Temotu Province, has long been recognised for its rich cultural heritage and pristine environment. With a relatively small population and limited development activity, the island's natural water sources are generally clean. However, ensuring reliable and sufficient access has remained a longstanding challenge. For over 20 years, communities relied on rainwater collection and an aging water system installed in the early 1980s. Over time, the system deteriorated, eventually leaving only a single standpipe—often dry—serving several villages. Droughts, increasingly frequent due to climate change, further strained already limited access to safe water. The recently completed St Luke Community Faea Water Project, which began in June 2023, constructed two water dams and installed 31 standpipes across five communities. As a result, 576 people now have a more consistent water supply for drinking, cooking, and washing. “This project has relieved one of our longest-standing burdens,” said Mr. Pae Seivaea, Chairman of the St Luke Community. “For years, we had to carry water long distances—mothers, children, everyone. Now, clean water is right in front of our homes. It is truly changing our daily lives.” The project is implemented under the Small Grants Programme funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Solomon Islands. It is part of broader efforts to support community-led solutions in remote areas vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. UNDP’s Team Leader for Resilience and Climate Change, Mr. Barnabas Bago, acknowledged the determination of Tikopia’s residents in delivering the project. “This is your success,” he said. “Water is life. It is a vital resource for human survival, and too many communities in Solomon Islands still live without reliable access to clean and safe drinking water. You are fortunate, and you’ve earned it through your hard work and partnership with relevant stakeholders.” The project contributes to both national and international development goals, including the Solomon Islands National Development Strategy Objective 2—focused on addressing basic needs and improving food security—and UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. As water now flows more reliably into households, the project reflects how community efforts—when matched with appropriate support—can create long-term, practical improvements even in the most isolated parts of the country.
