Minister Rick Houenipwela reaffirms Solomon Islands’ commitment to g7+ priorities on peacebuilding, resilience and development.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Rick Houenipwela met with the Secretariat of the g7+ on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET) headquarters in Honiara.
The g7+ Secretary-General, Dr. Helder da Costa, is leading a delegation from the Secretariat to Solomon Islands to strengthen engagement with the Government in its capacity as Chair of the g7+, and to seek the country’s support in advancing the vision and priorities of the organisation.
Minister Houenipwela thanked the Secretary-General and his delegation for the opportunity to meet and discuss how the g7+ and Solomon Islands can work together to advance the shared priorities of member states, particularly the importance of peace in the context of today’s volatile and changing world.
Minister Houenipwela said Solomon Islands is honoured to serve as Chair of the g7+ and remains committed to advancing the collective priorities of its member states.
“Our Chairmanship will focus on strengthening solidarity and amplifying the voices of conflict-affected countries.
“We hope to elevate messaging around country-led solutions, peacebuilding, resilience and sustainable development, through sharing our experience as a post-conflict nation,” Minister Houenipwela said.
The g7+ is an intergovernmental organisation of conflict-affected countries working collectively to promote peace, stability and resilience.
Established in 2010, the organisation comprises 20 member states. Its Secretariat is hosted in Timor-Leste, with offices in Lisbon and New York City.
Solomon Islands, under the leadership of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade is serving as Chair of the g7+ for a two-year term beginning in 2025.
