Relief maintenance works on Vura Road in East Honiara begin this week, with full rehabilitation planned under CAUSE II
The much-awaited relief maintenance works for Vura Road in East Honiara will commence this week.
The Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), in a statement today, acknowledged the ongoing concerns of Vura residents and road users regarding the deteriorating condition of the road.
“A local contractor is set to mobilize all their machinery and road crew, following a work plan tomorrow to commence relief works by ripping the worst sections spanning from the SDA bus stop to Kobito market.
“This urgent work includes cold patching, washout repairs, and drainage clearance—contingent on weather conditions for safe and efficient movement.”
The statement clarified that the relief works are temporary, while a full rehabilitation of Vura Road and its drainage system will be undertaken under the Community Access for Urban Services Enhancement Project (CAUSE II) in the coming months.
“Under Component 1 of the CAUSE II project, the Vura Road work plan will be finalized shortly after the survey and design to commence the tender process.
“This full rehabilitation will start from the SDA bus stop all the way to the Naha 4 road intersection,” the statement said.
The project will also include the upgrading of the Kobito Bridge.
The statement further noted that one of the major challenges affecting Vura Road is encroachment by several property owners, which obstructs the main drainage system.
“We look forward to this upcoming rehabilitation project to address and resolve this longstanding issue.”
In the meantime, routine road maintenance works on selected unsealed sections in East Honiara, funded through the government’s Enhanced Infrastructure Program (EIP), are ongoing and are expected to resume shortly now that rainy weather conditions have subsided.
Under Lot 1, maintenance works cover Zioke Road, Ranadi Crescent Road, Jackson Ridge Road, Baranaba Road, and Panatina Road.
Lot 2 includes Kobito Loop 1, April Ridge Road, Gilbert Camp 2 and 3 Roads, and Firehouse Road.
Some road networks under both lots have already been maintained, while the remaining works are expected to continue this month and onwards until the contracts expire.
